Our focus is to help you feel the joy of movement in all your classes whether they be aerial, fitness, or dance. At JVDF, we make fitness art.

Aerial Classes:

  • Aerial Yoga — Yoga with a twist! Hang upside down and maximize your stretching and strength conditioning in our aerial yoga hammocks;
  • Pole — You will learn all the basics including spins, climbs, and even get upside down;
  • Lyra — In this class you will learn a variety of ways to hang, wrap, twist, and mount the lyra, or aerial hoop;
  • Aerial Dance — Utilize your aerial skills in this class combining aerial hammock work with dance!  Learn some movement in the aerial hammock and tie it together in a short choreographed routine to music at the end;
  • Spinning Pole — In this class you will learn more advanced spinning moves and combos;
  • Silks — In this class you will use the fabric to wrap, suspend, fall, swing, and spiral your body into and out of various positions. Aerial silks may be used to fly through the air, striking poses and figures while suspended by special fabric;
  • Poleography — Jagged's specialty class!  Improve your musicality, smooth out your transitions, and time your pole skills with precision.  In this class you will have a 30 min. warm up, 30 minute pole session, and 30 minutes to learn choreography to tie together the pole moves you learned with dance.

Fitness Classes:

  • Aerial Conditioning — This is the perfect class for those looking to build strength and cardio endurance in a positive environment, for beginners who want to get into aerial, or a supporting class for those already doing it.  Class includes foundations of circuit training, cross-fit, and weightlifting with a short block of conditioning on actual aerial apparatuses every class;
  • Flexibility — Get in touch with your inner flexuality with this deep stretching class;
  • Hoop Movement — Explore the spiraling motion of the hula hoop all while developing a strong core and a great sense of rhythm!  This class will combine hula hooping skills with dance movement to create a flowing routine and get you sweating at the same time;
  • Stretch and Sculpt — You can expect a fun fast paced cardio warm up, a series of strength training that will burn your legs, abs, and upper body, followed by juicy stretches that incorporate yoga poses and techniques;
  • Sexyfit Cardio is a hour long workout that incorporates dance movements and designed to target your arms, abs, and glutes.

Our 800 square foot dance, group-exercise studio has a sprung dance floor, wall mounted and free-standing ballet barres, floor to ceiling mirrors, and a powerful sound system, plus inspiring art on the walls.

Classes:

  • Ballet — Teachers approaches differ depending on their training. Beginners and ballerinas returning to the barre after a long absence may attend all classes but the Saturday intermediate/advanced class, and the ballet pointe classes;
  • Pilates Mat Class — xpect different approaches to the matwork depending on what teacher is leading the class. Pilates props (we provide them) may or may not be used. Beginners to advanced practitioners are welcome. Teachers will offer modifications when needed;
  • Tai-Chi — While tai chi is a very old practice, our understanding of it is new and ongoing. Energetics, therapeutics, dynamic movement, meditation and self-defense are all addressed by the practice of Tai Chi;
  • Gyrokinesis® is an exercise movement developed by Juliu Horvath. This exercise system is based on fluid movements tha offer similar physical benefits of yoga, dance, and swimming, though it is not based on these or other specific exercise models. Gyrokinesis® exercises are designed to work the entire body through spinal movement and joint articulation. The movements are done seated, standing and on a mat;
  • Fit & Bendy Contortion Training.

Nearly a decade after our inception, Capoeira Malês has expanded to offer adult and kid level capoeira, Samba / Afro-Brazilian dance, and Maculelé to over 100 students.

Instructors:

  • Mestre Gavião (Viceroy Andrews) — From the age of 18 he began training martial arts including: Tae Kwon do, Karate (Goju-Ryu), Aikido, and Tai Chi. While attending Tennessee State University (Nashville) he saw a Capoeira demonstration and was immediately hooked. In 2005 Instrutor Gavião began training under Mestre Curisco while living and working in Washington DC. He is a co-founder and one of the original members of Capoeira Malês DC. Under the guidance of Mestre Curisco, Instrutor Gavião hopes to achieve the same level of growth and success for the Malês family in Los Angeles;
  • Mestre Curisco — He began teaching Capoeira as a Mestre in Seattle ten years ago at the request of a small group of students. Since his arrival, this original group of five students has grown into an internationally renowned school, Capoeira Malês. Mestre Curisco means “Master Lightning”, but his students simply call him Mestre. Through Capoeira Malês, Mestre Curisco provides an opportunity for students in Mexico, the United States, and Canada to learn about Brazilian culture and the art of Capoeira;
  • Mestre Lua Branca — He developed an interest in capoeira at the age of six and studied for many years in his hometown. In 1994, he moved to Vitoria, Espirito Santo to train and improve his technique and understanding of this unique Afro-Brazilian martial art. In 1995, he obtained his Professor cord and began teaching. In 1997, he was invited to participate in an international capoeira encounter in Vancouver, B.C. which led to his decision to emigrate to Canada. Over the next few years, in addition to teaching capoeira in Vancouver, he travelled and performed throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Asia and Mexico with several Afro-Brazilian dance companies.

    In August of 2000, he was awarded his Contra Mestre’s cord, and a few years later Lua moved from Vancouver to Toronto to continue his work there. In December 2004, Mestre Lua and Mestre Curisco decided to establish their own group – Grupo Capoeira Malês. Today they have students teaching in Brazil, the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Martial Arts (Program Directors — Laurent Buson, Tim Storms):

  • Wushu — A highly acrobatic style of kung fu, emphasizing graceful, extended movements, high jumps, flips and twists, and flashy weaponry.  Wushu is a performance art and competitive sport, judged similarly to gymnastics;
  • KIX — A high-energy kicking class, designed to improve cardiovascular health, leg speed and strength, jumping ability and agility;
  • Taiji — Tai Chi Chuan is an "internal art", emphasizing  slow, controlled movements, and breath control, to generate  chi power.

Programs:

  • Gymnastics (Program Directors — David St.Pierre, Gerry Wilensky): Gymnastics is the foundation of movement styles. Running, jumping, strength, flexibility and coordination are the key elements of all movement styles, and artistic gymnastics is the ultimate expression of those elements.  Whether you want to do gymnastics simply for it's own merits, or use gymnastics skills for other styles, like dance or martial arts, precise, clear movements are the mark of success.
  • Circus Arts (Program Director — Tim Storms): Every kid's dream is to run away with the circus, now they can, and still be home in time for dinner!  Juggling, slack-rope, unicycling, hand-balancing, silks, cyr wheel and clowning are all offered at The Academy.
  • Dance: Ballet, break-dancing, lindy-hop/swing, salsa and ball-room.  Study all styles of dance with the top instructors in the field.

Programs:

Personal training (Mobile Training) — This option is available for those who choose to work at an alternate gym or outside of a gym altogether. I will meet you at your home, office, apartment or condo gym. I am also available for outdoor workouts in your yard, pool, park, or the beach. Contact me for more information regarding pricing for Mobile Training;

Small Group Personal Training — This is not a "boot camp" but rather affordable personal training with a few other people sharing the hour with you. Sometimes we will do activies together like streching and abs or core, but often I will set up each client on a unique work program tailored to their individual needs. "Circuit training" is used as the primary training method. Over the course of an hour, you will use resistance bands, kettle bells, Bosuballs, free weights, cables, and your own body weight. There are 3-6 people in each class;

Electric Dance Fitness — We turn off the house lights, add club lights and lasers and the fitness party begins with all of your Favorite EDM DJs playing everything from House, Techno, Dub Step, Trap, Trance.
