Wushu, Gymnastics, Yoga and Dancing at The Academy of Movement Arts and Sciences The Academy of Movement Arts and Sciences 1 Photo

Martial Arts (Program Directors — Laurent Buson, Tim Storms):

  • Wushu — A highly acrobatic style of kung fu, emphasizing graceful, extended movements, high jumps, flips and twists, and flashy weaponry.  Wushu is a performance art and competitive sport, judged similarly to gymnastics;
  • KIX — A high-energy kicking class, designed to improve cardiovascular health, leg speed and strength, jumping ability and agility;
  • Taiji — Tai Chi Chuan is an "internal art", emphasizing  slow, controlled movements, and breath control, to generate  chi power.

Programs:

  • Gymnastics (Program Directors — David St.Pierre, Gerry Wilensky): Gymnastics is the foundation of movement styles. Running, jumping, strength, flexibility and coordination are the key elements of all movement styles, and artistic gymnastics is the ultimate expression of those elements.  Whether you want to do gymnastics simply for it's own merits, or use gymnastics skills for other styles, like dance or martial arts, precise, clear movements are the mark of success.
  • Circus Arts (Program Director — Tim Storms): Every kid's dream is to run away with the circus, now they can, and still be home in time for dinner!  Juggling, slack-rope, unicycling, hand-balancing, silks, cyr wheel and clowning are all offered at The Academy.
  • Dance: Ballet, break-dancing, lindy-hop/swing, salsa and ball-room.  Study all styles of dance with the top instructors in the field.

Instructors:

  • Laurent "Lohan" Buson — Stunts/ Martial Arts;
  • Chris Yung — Stunts/ Martial Arts;
  • David St. Pierre — Gymnastics/ Stunts;
  • Fabien Garcia — Martial Arts/Stunts.

Kung Fu at Seven Stars Kung Fu Seven Stars Kung Fu 1 Photo

At Seven Stars Kung Fu we practice the stye of Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu.  Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis was invented by a man named Wong Long.  Wong Long was a refugee at the Shaolin temple and a rebel against the standing government.  At the time it was the habit of the temple to provide refuge to many people, like most modern day churches.  Because of this many martial arts styles have passed through  the Shaolin Temple and have  been spread through out China from there.

Kung Fu at Playa Vista Martial Arts Playa Vista Martial Arts 1 Photo

Lawrence and his instructors offer classes for kids, adults, women’s self-defense, law enforcement, and a strong program for special needs kids and adults.

Instructors:

  • Dennis Jelinek — Dennis’s martial arts career started at the age of nine years old. That is when he started to study Judo for 3 years. In his teen years he moved on to Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwan Do and Boxing. In his early 20’s he studied Thai Mantis. Dennis started Kung-Fu San Soo in 1993 under First Generation Master Larry Wikel and trained through his 3rd Degree Black Belt. He then transferred to Master Lawrence Rouse and is currently at the rank of Seventh Degree Black belt and working towards his Master’s Degree. Dennis has put his martial arts skills to work in the security industry. Currently Dennis and his son are co-owners of Security by Jelinek and have been featured in Inside Kung-Fu magazine. Dennis’s wealth of experience makes him one of our top instructors with our kids, adults and women’s self-defense programs;
  • Doug Lutfey — Doug started his martial arts training with Master Rouse in 2000. Since his start in Kung-fu San Soo he has consistently trained three to four times per week. In 2003 he became an assistant instructor, and has been a full instructor since 2005. Doug has the talent of breaking down the complexities of the art so that newer students can more easily understand. In addition to his skills as an instructor in the kids and adult classes, Doug is active teaching in our special needs program;
  • Joseph Kaufmann (Fourth Degree Black Belt) — Joseph started his martial arts training with Master Rouse in 1999 at the age of 12 years old in the kids program. He trained four to five days a week and moved into the adult class at the age of 16. As his skill level increased, Joseph fast became one of the top students in the school. In addition to teaching the kids and adult classes, Joseph also trains our students from our special needs program.

Additional Programs:

  • Anti-Bullying — Dr. George Thompson created the Verbal Self-Defense Youth program. This coupled with Kung-Fu San Soo makes it a very powerful self-defense system for kids. The program consists of a thirteen-week series of classes given once a week where the kids learn various techniques to diffuse a confrontation. We start with learning about Anger guards. Anger guards are a way of identifying your hot buttons. It is knowing what triggers you to get angry. We teach the student to NAME IT, KNOW IT AND OWN IT so they have more self control and do not react with anger;
  • Private lessons with Master Rouse are available on most days, outside of regular class times. Lessons are available for both adults and children;
  • Women’s Self-Defense.

Tai Chi and Yoga at Far East Lounge Far East Lounge 1 Photo 1 Video

We will encourage and help you learn physical exercises that are right for you: Tai-chi, Chair Exercise, Qigong, walking, etc.

All of the activities will be organized by age-group as well as interest. And we encourage people to become volunteers at the Lounge, keeping the doors open, looking after one another, teaching classes. When there is enough interest in an activity and when we can identify someone to teach or lead an activity, Far East Lounge is the place to do it.

In the evenings, the space will be available to community groups (use fees may apply) for karaoke, business meetings, exhibits, rehearsals, etc. We are planning lots of "special events" as well.

Wushu at National Wushu Training Center National Wushu Training Center 4 Photo

While we do teach basic self defense we do not fight in our school. At the same time we do not teach dance either. Wushu has evolved into the performance sport you see today and while the movements are highly exaggerated and beautiful, there are always hidden applications beyond the surface.

We adhere to a strict four year black belt program which includes 1 year of basics in wushu and basic self defense, followed by 3 years of empty hand (Changquan, fighting set, and Nanquan), weapons (sabre, staff, sword and spear), including beginning, intermediate and advanced compulsory routines and advanced fighting sets.

International, individual, traditional routines and weapons are taught after the four year Black Belt program has been completed.
