Classes:

  • Beginner — focus on ukemi skills, fundamental principles, and basic techniques;
  • Basics — generally, techniques will be organized along one theme (various ways of using one movement, for example, or various ways of responding to one attack), and enough time will be given to each technique so that beginners can start to become familiar with it;
  • General;
  • Randori — focus on defense against multiple, simultaneous attacks;
  • Weapons — present bokken and jo (wooden sword and staff) practice;
  • Chief instructor — Chris Jordan, 6th Dan.

Our Aikido instruction includes traditional forms, as well as defense against knife attacks.

Instructors:

  • Nobuyoshi Higashi — In 1960 as part of a global initiative to spread judo across the world, he took an exchange position under the University to teach Judo in the United States. He expanded his training to other arts such as Karate, Aikido and Jujitsu. He authored many martial arts books and eventually developed his own style of Jujitsu called Kokushi-Ryu Jujutsu. In his various studies, he has achieved the ranks of 9th dan Red belt in Judo from the Kodokan/USJF, 8th dan in Aikido and 8th dan in Karate;
  • Shintaro Higashi — He achieved success at the world level in Judo in the IJF international Judo circuit. He climbed as high as 43rd in the world, medalling in multiple World Cups, competing in the World Championship for the US team. He was selected for the Pan American and the World Championships teams for USA in the sport of Sambo. He is also a 2x all-state wrestler, in HS and in the NCAA (New York State). He holds the rank of 6th degree black belt in Judo from the Kodokan/USJF and numerous other ranks under his father in JJ, Aikido and Karate.

Instructors:

  • Walter Gonzalez — the chief instructor at Asahi Aikikai New York since 2008 and currently hold the rank of Yondan, 4th degree black belt in Aikido. He began aikido training in 1990 at the New York Aikikai and have been a student of Yamada Sensei, Shihan 8th Dan for over 20 years. Walter has the privilege to train under Sugano Sensei, Shihan also 8th Dan, and along the way with many other Shihans and He is recognized and certified by the United States Aikido Federation and the Aikikai World Headquarters in Japan;
  • Thomas McNulty — lead instructor. Tom holds the rank of Nidan, 2nd degree black belt in Aikido and has been training over 20 years. Before he walked into the New York Aikikai in 1989, Tom had trained in both Chinese and Japanese martial arts since an early age. Tom was also fortunate to train at a time when both Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, 8th dan and Seichi Sugano Shihan, 8th Dan, were both teaching at NYA;
  • Wigberto Rivera — instructor. Wigberto began his aikido training in 1992 and joined the New York Aikikai in 1994. Wigberto is part of the teaching staff at both Asahi Aikikai and New York Aikikai, and currently holds the rank of Yondan, 4th degree black belt under the United States Aikido Federation and the Aikikai World Headquarters in Japan. In addition Wigberto has trained in Judo, Wrestling, Combat Sambo and Wing Chun.

For adults and kids from 6 years.

A typical class for adults includes any of the following elements: Aiki Taiso (exercises and warm up), Taijutsu (unarmed techniques), Bukiwaza (armed techniques), Kokyuho(breathing techniques), Zazen (sitting meditation).

Children practicing Aikido will find themselves in an atmosphere where cooperation is emphasized and compassion is fostered. The kids class is energetic and playful, and attention to safety is paramount.

Instructors:

  • Ken Yamazaki — chief instructor, 5th Dan Aikikai, Shidoin. He began Aikido and Zen Buddhism studies in 1989 with Reverend Joseph Jarman. Yamazaki Sensei was also a longtime student of Fumio Toyoda Shihan, and uchideshi (live-in student) of Yasuo Kobayashi Shihan. He has also trained with Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba at Aikikai Hombu Dojo. Yamazaki Sensei is a direct student of Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, a pioneer in introducing Aikido to North America;
  • Kim Johnston — 3rd Dan Aikikai, Fukushidoin, is the head instructor for the children's program at NYEA. Kim's classes are fun and energetic, and focus on the personal development of each student. Kim is also a Shiatsu practitioner (certified by the Ohashi Institute since 1997), and holds an MFA in modern dance. Nacho Mena, 2nd Dan Aikikai, is an assistant instructor at NYEA. He began Aikido in 1996 with Coryl Crane Shihan, a student of Kazuo Chiba Shihan, 8th Dan. Nacho also holds a 4th Dan in Judo.

  • Stewart Johnson Sensei — Godan, Dojo cho/Chief Instructor Johnson Sensei began his Aikido and formal Buddhist training in 1992 at Jikishinkan Dojo under Joseph Jarman Sensei. Currently ranked Godan (5th degree black belt), he became Chief Instructor and Dojo-cho of Jikishinkan Dojo when Jarman Sensei retired in 2005. As part of the Aikido Association of America, Johnson Sensei was able to attend seminars and receive instruction from Shihan Fumio Toyoda from 1992 until 2001. A long-time practicing Buddhist, Johnson Sensei took formal vows in 2009 with Greg Tensho Noble Sensei;
  • Seth Giammanco Sensei — Sandan, BBA/Jikishinkan Dojo Board of Directors Seth Giammanco Sensei started aikido in 2002 as a student in Jikishinkan’s six-week introductory course. He is ranked as Sandan (3rd degree black belt) by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan, and received assistant instructor certification (fukushidoin);
  • Alison Lincoln Sensei — Sandan, BBA/Jikishinkan Dojo Board of Directors Alison Lincoln Sensei has been studying aikido since 2005, and is currently ranked as Sandan (3rd degree black belt) by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan and received assistant instructor certification (fukushidoin);
  • Adam Krent Sensei — Nidan, BBA/Jikishinkan Dojo Board of Directors Adam Krent Sensei began his martial arts training in New England in 1984 practicing Shotokan Karate. His efforts to pursue a universal self defense system in college in Brooklyn led him to discover Aikido and Zazen at Jiki Shin Kan, then a secluded word-of-mouth small membership Dojo with a basement mat space in the residential Limestone of Joseph Jarman Sensei. Krent Sensei trained and attended AAA seminars regularly with Fumio Toyoda Sensei as head instructor through the 90’s until the passing of Shihan in 2001 on Independence Day. Since that time, Krent Sensei has been regularly teaching weekly classes and is now honored to be recognized with the rank of Nidan (2nd degree black belt) by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan;
  • David Gravens — Nidan David Gravens Sensei began training in 2005, and is currently ranked as Nidan (2nd degree black belt) by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan and received assistant instructor certification (fukushidoin). He has participated in Jikishinkan’s youth program for more than four years and frequently travels to train with senior aikido instructors.

In the children's program, we teach the art of self-defense with smiles and safety.

Instructors:

  • Gordon Wormser — 6th Dan, Shidoin. Gordon began his study of martial arts in 1971, simultaneously studying Jiu-Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do. In 1978 he also embraced the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira. At long last, in 1980, he met Lehrman Sensei and began his study of Aikido. A 6th dan shidoin, he is Lehrman Sensei's most senior student and also holds the rank of 7th dan in Jiu-Jitsu and 4th dan in Tae Kwon Do;
  • Claire Keller — 6th Dan, Shidoin. Claire began her study of aikido in 1980. During her time on the mat, Claire has been fortunate to study intensively with a number of O Sensei's direct students: Chiba Sensei, Kanai Sensei, Yamada Sensei and Sugano Sensei and many of these great teachers' senior students like Hal Lehrman Sensei. A 6th dan shidoin, Claire began teaching in the late 1980s and also teaches at New York Aikikai and Aikido of Red Bank;
  • Jaime Kahn — 5th Dan, Shidoin. Jaime started Aikido in 1990 while enrolled at NYU, joining a class taught by Claire Keller in the school gym. A devoted wrestler and team co-captain in high school, he expected to simply try out something new while preparing to join the university's wrestling team;
  • Wendell Gault — 4th Dan;
  • Curtis Harris — 4th Dan. Curtis started practicing aikido at Aikido of Park Slope 20 years ago, and has been teaching class for 8 years. He has been practicing yoga for 17 years (Iyengar & Bikram) and is also a student of pilates. In the mid 70's to early 80's, Curtis practiced Kyokushinkai Kan Karate;
  • Brian Curtis — 4th Dan. He has been practicing Aikido for 25 years and teaching for about 15;
  • Evan Sobel — 3rd Dan. Evan began teaching at Aikido Of Park Slope in 2005. His classes focus on developing free flowing movement, precise and efficient technique, intuitive improvisation and smooth ukemi (falling and rolling). He currently holds the rank of Sandan. He began practicing Aikido in 1999, previously studying Ninjitsu beginning in 1987, and has also occasionally practiced Wu style Tai Chi Chuan;
  • Clem Richardson — 3rd Dan. A Sandan, Clem's Aikido lineage includes studying with Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei (NY Aikikai), Nelson Andujar Sensei (Miami Aikikai), Luqman Hakeem Sensei and his son, Tariq Hakeem, both of the Brooklyn Aikido Club. Having studied with Lehrman Sensei for more than sixteen years;
  • JJ Montes — 3rd Dan. John started his aikido training at the New York Aikikai while in college in 1990;
  • Gillian MacLeod — 3rd Dan. Gillian has been practicing aikido since 1998, and holds the rank of sandan. She started training in Toronto, Canada at Aikido Tendokai, as a student of Sensei Yumi Nakamura. She moved to New York in 2005 and began training with Yamada Sensei at New York Aikikai;
  • Paul Alexander — 2nd Dan. Paul has led children's aikido classes for over two years;
  • Keith Miller — 2nd Dan;
  • Tom Worsnopp — 1st Dan. Tom has been practicing aikido since 2004. He has been training with Lehrman Sensei at Aikido of Park Slope, and teaching to children since 2010;
  • Natalia Safronenkova — 1st Dan. Natalia began practicing aikido in Russia in 1998 and traveled throughout Europe studying under many aikido masters. In 2009, she moved to the US and started her practice at New York Aikikai under the instruction of Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan.

  • Robert Waltzer Sensei — along with Aikido, he also holds the rank of black belt in Jujitsu and Karate (Go-Ju Ryu). His 40 years of teaching experience is clearly evident in his ability to break down techniques and teach students of all abilities while leading exciting and stimulating classes. Waltzer Sensei trained directly under Richard Bowe Shihan, the U.S. Director of Nihon Goshin Aikido. He is a full-time professional Aikido instructor;
  • David Komatsu — as a youth he spent some time training in Kempo Karate. After college he moved to Japan where he taught English and began his training in Aikido. Upon returning to the U.S., David took a break from martial arts to earn an advanced degree and start a family. He resumed his training in Aikido about 4 years ago at Aikido of Queens and has been training for himself as well as assisting as an instructor in the junior division;
  • Tim Brodlieb — Before his training in Aikido, he practiced Judo, Okinawan Kenpo, Karate, and Kung Fu. Tim has been training at Aikido of Queens for the past 6 years and is the process of testing for Sho Dan (Black belt);

  • Gary Wagener — Chief Instructor, Sensei is a Sandan (3rd degree black belt) Aikikai, recognized by Hombu dojo in Japan. In 2012 he was appointed as a member of the National Teaching Committee for Zenshinkai Aikido Association;
  • Robert Hoff — Sensei is a Sandan (3rd degree black belt) Aikikai, recognized by Hombu dojo in Japan. Mr. Hoff began his aikido training at Jikishinkan dojo in Brooklyn, New York, under the instruction of Joseph Jarman Sensei. It was following an intensive period in the practice of Zen Buddhism that he became initially attracted to the art;
  • Thomas Smith — Sensei is a Shodan (1st degree black belt), recognized by Hombu dojo in Japan. He started his training in 2007 and instantly found aikido to be a unique, challenging martial art that not only trains the body but also the mind. It's still the same today.

Classes:

  • Children (ages 4-5) — сhildren’s programm (for ages 4-5) focuses on developing coordination, concentration, and cooperation through basic aikido exercises, techniques, and games. Classes are limited to 8 students;
  • Teenage (ages 10-15) — teenage students train in our adult program. In addition to developing self-defense skills, youth classes focus on developing coordination, motor skills, cooperation, and self-awareness through aikido techniques, games, and exercises;
  • Youth (ages 6-12) — all youth classes are taught by our head instructor, Josh Paul Sensei. Paul Sensei has extensive experience working with children, including those with behavioral issues, and developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities.
  • Adult (ages 16 and up) — adult classes begin with stretching and warm-up exercises that improve balance, coordination, and body awareness. This is followed by rolling and falling practice, and technique practice with a partner. During this part of class, participants learn the roles of attacker and defender, and develop martial and communication skills, as well as fitness.

Instructors:

  • Josh Paul Sensei — Paul is the dojo-cho and chief instructor of AOSB. He has been practicing and teaching aikido for nearly 20 years, and is a full-time aikido teacher. Paul Sensei began training at Jikishinkan Aikido Dojo, Brooklyn, NY, with Joseph Jarman Sensei and others. There, he taught adult classes and was the director of the youth program until starting AOSB. Through Mind Body Arts and other organizations, he teaches aikido in NYC public schools and elsewhere, bringing aikido to elementary and high school students, students with autism and other disabilities, and at-risk teenagers. He has published several articles about his teaching experiences and methods. Paul Sensei is a yondan (fourth-degree black belt) and received instructor certification (shidoin) from the Aikido World Alliance (AWA). He is also a shodan (black belt) in shindo muso ryu jodo, a classical Japanese martial art of staff and sword;
  • Michael Embrey — Michael began practicing aikido at the age of 8 with Andrew Sato Shihan in Chicago. He joined AOSB after moving to NYC to attend college. He is now a sandan (third-degree black black) and AWA-certified instructor, and teaches adult classes;
  • Stephanie Flores — Stephanie began training more than 10 years ago, and now teaches adult and youth classes at AOSB. Stephanie is a sandan and an AWA-certified instructor;
  • Greg Squared — Greg has been studying aikido for nearly 10 years. He is a nidan (second-degree black belt), and teaches youth and adult classes;
  • Jason Loeffler — Jason began training at AOSB in the summer of 2014 in a 4-week beginner's course. Now ranked 2nd kyu, Jason is an assistant instructor in our children's and youth programs.

Training covers empty hand techniques as well as techniques using the traditional Japanese weapons (wooden sword, staff, knife).

Drawing from the principles of Aikido this course is designed to cover all aspects of defending ones self against all physical assault and edged weapons. Also available are self defense courses designed for women. The women's course focuses on avoiding dangerous confrontations and facilitating escape.

Instructors:

  • Ryugan Robert D. Savoca — chief instructor. Ryugan began studying judo and aikido at age 13 in San Diego County. He continued to study aikido at UCLA and then the West Los Angeles Aikido Institute. Moving to New York, he continued his training at Aikido of Manhattan, for a year and a half with Juba Nour Shihan. Afterwards, he apprenticed to T.K. Chiba Shihan, as an uchideshi (live in student) in San Diego for a year. Moving back to New York, he resumed training with Juba Nour Shihan and then started Brooklyn Aikikai in 2001. Savoca holds the rank of rokudan (6th dan), and is certified to teach by Birankai North America;
  • Kate Savoca — assistant instructor. Kate began her aikido training in 2002 at Brooklyn Aikikai. She currently holds the rank of yondan (4th dan) and is certified to teach by Birankai North America. Kate has been teaching at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, NY for over 15 years. Kate is the director of the children's program at Brooklyn Aikikai.
