Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestres of Capoeira Luanda.

Instructors:

  • Professor Sabiá started his training under the supervision of Mestre Jelon Vieira with Grupo Capoeira Brasil in Salvador. Sabiá received his Professor rank in 2012. Currently Professor Sabiá teaches in New York City and the surrounding boroughs at the YMCA in Flushing, Queens and PMT Dance Studio in Manhattan;
  • Instrutora Trindade has been training with Capoeira Luanda first under Professor Tiba and then under Professor Sabiá since 2005. Under Professor Sabiá's guidance, she has reached the rank of graduada. She currently teaches children’s Capoeira classes in Queens and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also works for the Capoeira Center of New York, a nonprofit organization, where she promotes Capoeira through school presentations and programs. She is delighted to join the staff of PMT Dance Studio and teach Capoeira.

Our adult classes are 1.5 hours long. They begin with stretching, warm-up and strengthening exercises. The training portion of the class focuses on repetition of Capoeira movements to build strength, form and the endurance for the art. Classes end with a roda (capoeira circle). Portuguese language practice is an important aspect of class; we learn numbers, movements, songs and basic vocabulary while we train.

Classes:

  • Beginners Capoeira — Physical conditioning, individual skills, drill combinations and musicality are the focus of these classes and are required before joining the All-Levels classes;
  • All Levels — These mixed-level classes;
  • Kids — This classes focus on capoeira movements, wich have Portuguese names it is also an excellent tool for teaching a new language. Students learn to play the instruments and sing as well to listen to the rhythms to guide their movements.

Instructors:

  • Instrutora Formiguinha — Leticia Monteiro, known as “Formiguinha” in the Capoeira community, began playing Capoeira in 1998, during her sophomore year at Hunter College CUNY. Currently, Leticia is training under the instruction of Professor Lampreia, founder of Motumbaxe Capoeira and Artistic Director of Allied Capoeira Arts Initiative (A.C.A.I). Leticia sits on the Board of Directors of A.C.A.I. as Secretary. Leticia completed her B.S. in Physical Education in May 2003 and her M.S. in Physical Therapy at Hunter College CUNY in May 2007;
  • Graduado Kamikazee — Herman Pardon is known as “Kamikazee” in the capoeira community. In 2004, at a Capoeira Batizado, he met Professor Lampreia. In 2005, he was awarded the rank of Yellow Cord and finally baptized into the world of Capoeira. In 2009, he received his Blue Cord and ranked 3rd place in the US Open Capoeira Tournament. He currently has a Purple and Green Cord.

Anderson Dias-Moreira aka (Professor Anderson Capixaba da ASCAB) — Professor Anderson, learned capoeira and still under the teachings of Mestre Doutor AKAm (Adenilson dos Santos) since 1997. In 2009 Anderson was advanced to Formado level (Undergrad)  and in the summer of 2015 Professor Anderson acquired the Teacher's level by the accordance of the Brazilian Confederation of Capoeira and of the American Society of Capoeira and Arts from Brazil AKA (ASCAB). Professor Anderson Capixaba da ASCAB is certified by the Red Cross of America for CPR/AED.Professor Anderson is also a Qualified Personal Trainer by AFAA/NASM and ASFA.

  • Treinel Michael ‘Puck’ Kranz — For 4 years, he studied in Oakland under CM Rogerio and Mestre Jurandir, as well as the other mestres of FICA, which transformed his life for the better. Upon moving back to his native New York in 2004, Puck sought to continue studying, playing and living Capoeira Angola, which eventually led to co-founding the group in New York. In both Oakland and New York, Puck has worked with various programs for children, youth and people struggling with addiction, realizing the power of Capoeira Angola to heal, empower and build community;
  • Njoli Brown — He began his study of Capoeira in Denmark (1997). After two years of intensive study with group Quilombo do Norte came the decision to study the Angola style of capoeira with a master (mestre) of the art form. In 1999 came a move to Seattle to train with Mestre Jurandir Nascimento who, at the time, had recently moved to the northwest from southern Brasil to start a chapter of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation.
