Teachers:

  • Treinel Michael ‘Puck’ Kranz — For 4 years, he studied in Oakland under CM Rogerio and Mestre Jurandir, as well as the other mestres of FICA, which transformed his life for the better. Upon moving back to his native New York in 2004, Puck sought to continue studying, playing and living Capoeira Angola, which eventually led to co-founding the group in New York. In both Oakland and New York, Puck has worked with various programs for children, youth and people struggling with addiction, realizing the power of Capoeira Angola to heal, empower and build community;
  • Njoli Brown — He began his study of Capoeira in Denmark (1997). After two years of intensive study with group Quilombo do Norte came the decision to study the Angola style of capoeira with a master (mestre) of the art form. In 1999 came a move to Seattle to train with Mestre Jurandir Nascimento who, at the time, had recently moved to the northwest from southern Brasil to start a chapter of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation.

  • Contra Mestre Chuvisco — Mr. Silva studies Capoeira withMestre Jelon and holds the rank of contramestre in Capoeira Luanda. Mr. Silva has been a Capoeira guest teacher at the Federal University of SantaCatarina, Federal University of Goiás and ColegioAvila among others in Brazil. Internationally he has guest taught in Spain, France, Holland, Prague Czech Republic, Italy, Australia, Colombia and Germany. In the United States he also guest taught at Alvin Ailey Extension, Summer Stage, KIPP-AMP, Latin American Performance Program in NY; HoggetowneMiddle Charter School, Gainesville, FL, and in many Public Schools in NY. He has won 1st Price in several Capoeira Tournaments in Brazil and in the United States. Has appeared in many magazines including RevistaCapoeira — the most important Capoeira magazine in Brazil. Mr. Silva works as Professor for TischDrama Department at New York University;

His master is the head instructor at the New York Capoeira Center and founder of Afro Brazil Arts: Mestre Ombrinho (Master Michael Goldstein) has over 31 years practicing capoeira and over 24 years experience teaching.  He is the first North American Capoeira Master.

Classes:

  • All Levels (Open) — beginnerd, intermediate, advanced;
  • Kids — the kids classes at the Arte Capoeira Center are for 4 to 11 year-olds. (12 and older can train with the adult class on Saturday).

Class structure

After a warm-up with basic capoeira movements and exercises specifically designed for capoeira, the students are divided in groups to continue training with drills and sequences according to their skill level. A roda (capoeira circle) usually closes the class.

Instrutor Mucuiù is the Founder and Executive Director of the Arte Capoeira Center. He has been teaching capoeira in the New York City area for over 15 years.

Adult programs:

  • Intro & Conditioning Program — Duration: 30 minute classes for 2-4 weeks. Curriculum: learn 5 core basic capoeira moves that condition you for the Level l program;
  • Level 1 Program (Light Green Cord) — Duration: 45 & 30 minute classes x 1-2 years. Curriculum: 13 basic moves including five circular kicks, combinations, plus the first five sequences of attacks and escapes with a partner. Music lessons with capoeira instruments and how to play the game of capoeira inside the circle is part of Level l;
  • Level II Program (Dark Green) — Duration: 1-2 years. Curriculum: New movements and combinations to master balance, strength and control. Sequences 6-10;
  • Level III & IV Program (Green-Yellow & Yellow) — Duration: 2-4 years. Curriculum: Advanced kicks and take towns. Sequences 11-15. Levels lll & lV develop speed, power, reflexes and precision;
  • TLP: Teaching & Leadership Program (Yellow);
  • Level V (Yellow-Blue) / Level Vl (Blue).
