At New Amsterdam Fencing Academy (NAFA), we stress the four complimentary elements in training a fencer: Group work (footwork and conditioning), individual lessons, practice bouting, and competitions.

NAFA offers classes for children of all ages. We also organize fencing birthday parties, school programs, and camps.

Weekly group fencing classes are the core of our program.  The group format fosters cohesion among club members, teaches good sportsmanship, and helps develop key social skills.

Programs:

  • Junior — program for students ages 13 to 18 up offers a two-hour class integrating intricate footwork, advanced weapon control, strategy and tactics, as well as the long-term self-discipline key to navigating a successful adolescence;
  • Youth — fencers aged 9 to 12 are ready to commit to an hour (Beginner) or two-hour long (Advanced) group class emphasizing the technical and the tactical aspects of the sport;
  • FIT Kids (Fencers In Training) — 6 to 8 year old beginning swordsmen engage in an hour-long class that uses the building blocks of competitive fencing to emphasize the importance of working together. First through third graders engage in games and exercises that focus on the development of hand-eye coordination, general fitness, and body movement. The New York Gauchos Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball program offers youth in New York City the highest quality athletic programming, academic support and enrichment, and opportunities for lifelong success.

Our elite AAU program, one of the longest-running and most successful after-school basketball programs in the country, has four competitive divisions for boys and girls. Each year we provide approximately 300 student athletes with an elite travel team experience, academic enrichment, and educational opportunities.

There is one team for each grade level from 2nd to 11th grades. Our four competitive divisions are:

  • High School Boys (grades 9-12);
  • Middle School Boys (grades 6-8);
  • Lower School Boys (grades 2-5).

The Gauchos Weekend Developmental Program (WDP) is the premiere basketball summer camp in NYC and is divided into two groups: Small Fry (ages 6-8) and Super Biddy (ages 9-12).

All participants will learn the basics of basketball including Dribbling, Passing and shooting. The program is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays and will be closed on Major holidays.

Junior Programs:

  • Quickstart (Ages 3-7) — The Quickstart program is designed for our youngest beginners who are usually 3-7 years old. The Quickstart Program utilizes USTA-approved foam balls, mini-nets and age and level-appropriate drills. In fun and friendly one hour and 45 minute classes, we offer fundamental skill-building exercises critical to creating early muscle memory;
  • Junior Development Program (Ages 6-12) — For beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate level players. This program, offered in 1 hour and 1.5 hour sessions, focuses primarily on the nuts and bolts of stroke production. They also emphasize dynamic footwork and live ball drills with quick movements that are essential to developing the complete tennis player. Upon completion of this program, the successful JDP student will have a solid understanding of basic score keeping, a complete tennis game and should be able to maintain baseline rallies;

  • Advanced Training Program — For advanced and advanced-intermediate level players, the ATP program offers comprehensive training for players involved in, or considering, tournament play. This two hour comprehensive program starts with a dynamic warm-up and concludes with game-based drills and supervised match play. Once all the strokes are honed, our instructors guide students towards constructing points, tactically working through games, and strategizing a match plan through playing sets. Many students who have completed this program can be found playing USTA tournaments and participating on their school tennis teams;

  • Elite High Performance Training — Our Elite High Performance (EHP) program is by invitation only, and based on talent identification and tryout. EHP1, for our most advanced 12 and over students, will be held Monday-Friday from 5:30-8:00pm and Sunday from 3:00pm-5:00pm. EHP2, which is designed for our most advanced 11 and under students will take place Monday-Friday 3:45-6:00pm and Sunday from 3:00pm-5:00pm. A minimum of three program days is recommended for EHP1 and a minimum of two days is recommended for EHP2.

Summer Programs — Stadium Tennis Center offers a unique array of summer tennis programs designed for tennis players of all levels to experience. Through our partnership with Gotham Tennis Academy, we have assembled some of the most talented, and engaging tennis pros in New York City. Our pros share a passion to work closely with players of all levels and ages.

Adult Programs:

  • Group Clinics — Our clinics are designed to challenge both the body and mind, by offering an even distribution of drill-based instruction AND doubles match play. Our pros will have you moving like never before with foot-work based drills and cardio tennis based games, prior to match play;
  • Cardio Tennis — Cardio Tennis is a USTA endorsed program that provides calorie melting levels of cardiovascular activity through fun and challenging on-court tennis drills and games. They combine their most popular drills and games with constant footwork movements, from warm-up to cool down, to give you the best workout possible.

Private lessons are offered to players of all ages and levels.

Coaches:

  • Eric Faro — Eric grew up in Riverdale and attended Horace Mann, where he played #1 singles for all four years and subsequently at Ohio State University. Eric is excited about his new role as a Director at Gotham Tennis Academy and this new phase of his tennis career in NYC and the Hamptons;
  • Andy Stuber — Andy is a teaching pro from Basel, Switzerland. He grew up playing his tennis on European red clay courts and brings a tremendous work ethic and passion to the courts at Gotham Tennis Academy. Andy has been known to use his outstanding, European work ethic to teach and inspire our juniors. Andy is comfortable teaching all levels of players, including munchkins, jdp, atp and adult;
  • David Graham — Highlights of his professional tennis career include his top ten world ranking in doubles and his appearance in the semi-final round of the Australian Open. As a coach, David has worked with three top ten players on the world tour. Trained by Ken Rosewall, among others, David has a real appreciation for the intellectual and physical aspects necessary for success at a high level;
  • Ajay Kumar — He has played at a premier high school, a Division 1 college and on the professional tour. With a background in Sports Medicine, and a degree in Education, Ajay's in-depth knowledge of the physiology and tennis strategy attracts players of all levels and age. As an advisor to Irina Falconi, a native New Yorker and professional player on the women's tour (WTA);
  • Michael Moore — He enjoyed a stellar junior career, achieving a top five USTA Eastern 18s singles ranking when he was only fifteen years old. After junior tennis, Michael competed professionally and qualified for various ATP futures events before deciding to play collegiately for Florida A&M University. There he led the Rattlers to a top 60 NCAA Division 1 ranking while winning over 100 singles matches and 90 doubles matches, breaking school records in both. He was an HBCU national champion two times. He has a particular interest and enthusiasm for teaching High Performance and QuickStart 10 and Under;
  • Gabriel Clinger — He began playing tennis at the age of eight and learned the game at The Academy of Tennis, Jerusalem. He specializes in working with our youngest players on fundamental skill development, and has become an integral part of our flourishing 10 and Under programs at Gotham Stadium. Gabriel has considerable international teaching experience, working as an instructor in Israel, Mexico and France, as well as participating in continuing education seminars in Germany and the U.S.;
  • Mike Haddad — Mike achieved number one rankings in the USTA Eastern section. Mike trained with such notables as Tommy Haas and Xavier Malise. His favorite players include Andre Agassi for his heart and Raphael Nadal and Roger Federer for both giving so much back to the game;
  • Lesley Rosenthal — Lesley was born in Forest Hills New York, and trained at Port Washington Tennis Academy with well-known tennis professionals. She was taught by the late Harry Hopman. She received a B.S in Physical Education from Temple University where she was #1 tennis player in singles and doubles;
  • Luis De La Cruz — An accomplished player and teacher alike, Luis uses his fun, enthusiastic personality to engage his students on the court. Luis has loyal followings in both our junior and adult programs. Luis teaches a methodical, well-organized lesson with a careful balance of instruction and game based drilling. As a young player in the Dominican Republic, Luis looked up to and emulated the classic serve and volley game of Stefan Edberg;
  • Rachel Aaron — She attended Limestone College in Gaffney, SC where she played #1 singles and doubles all 4 years. She earned All- Conference teams all 4 years in the Carolina-Virginia conference and was an MVP freshman through her senior year. She graduated in 2004 with a degree in Fitness and Wellness. Rachel is a PTR certified professional since 2004.

Programs:

  • Junior "First Serve" — It is an introductory tennis program for children from 3 to 14 years old at the beginner to intermediate levels. These classes are for future recreational players. There is focus on general movement and balance, in addition to tennis-specific skills. Classes are held after schools and on weekends in spring, summer and fall sessions: spring (8-weeks), summer & fall (6-weeks);
  • Junior Ace Program — For players 9 to 16, with a strong interest in tennis and intermediate-to-advanced skill levels, we recommend our Junior Ace Program, which is a two-hour program, with 4 participants to a court;
  • Private Lessons — The RCTA offers private and semi-private lessons with several experienced teaching pros, including Head Pro Froi Silva, Program Director Ben Levin, Gary Yee, Maurice Hardy, Carlos Carrera. RCTA membership is not required to take private lessons;
  • Adult Group Lessons — On weeknights and weekend afternoons, RCTA pros conducts tennis clinics for adults. Skill-level categories include Beginner, Low-Intermediate and High-Intermediate. Hour-long clinics are held weekly and are available in 4, 6 and 8-week packages. Options include 4, 5 and 6-person groups;
  • RCTA tournaments — Each season the RCTA runs a series of singles, doubles and mixed doubles tournaments for adults. All tournaments except the Men's Open Singles use a non-traditional, round-robin format, using short sets and no-ad scoring;
  • Tennis Ladders — RCTA runs three very successful singles ladders: an Open Ladder, on which both men and women may participate; a Women's Ladder; and a ladder for men ages 45 and over. All players must be RCTA members. This is a ranking system and players try to move up the ladder by challenging higher-ranked players to a match. If the challenger wins the match, he or she moves up to that spot and everyone in between slides back one spot. If the challenger loses the match, everyone stays where they were. Players may challenge anyone up to 20 places higher (exception: those ranked 95 or lower may challenge anyone ranked 76 or lower). New players may make their first challenge as high as they like. Win and they move to that position. Lose and they must start at the bottom and work their way up;
  • Cardio Tennis — This is a high-energy fitness work out on the tennis court with Ben Levin, certified Cardio Tennis instructor. Three-week series for RCTA members only. Maximum 6 people to a group.
