Technical Director and Coach — Merlin Thompson. A graduate of Queens College where he lettered in several sports including volleyball, Merlin is currently the acting head coach of Queens College volleyball. He serves as a cadre instructor for USA Volleyball as well as The Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) New York City Junior Rep. He also serves as technical director and coach of the Creole Big Apple Volleyball juniors club. Merlin has also coached in the New York Empire State Games, and played within the Creole adults program.

The Lost Battalion Hall Weightlifting Team has active junior (up to 20 years old), senior (21–34 years old), and masters (35 years or older) programs for lifters. Several of our lifters have lifted and placed in national and international competitions. We accept all people of all ages and welcome new lifters.

The team is a member of USA Weightlifting (USAW) and is coached by a USAW-certified coach, Joe Triolo, with over 25-years experience in the sport. Coach Triolo has developed and coached several national champions. Assistant coaches Jeff Scott, Jerry Dunne, and Len Bacino have trained all levels of lifters.

Classes:

  • Weightlifting Foundations at JDI Barbell focuses on the fundamentals of (Olympic) weightlifting technique. This course will teach the basics of the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each class includes guided warm-up, the programmed workout which will include substantial hands-on technique work along with accessory strength work. This class is ideal for beginners;
  • The JDI Barbell Weightlifting Team is intended for athletes looking to make a commitment to train in a focused, competitive environment. Weightlifting Team classes are programmed with competition-level performance in mind. Each session is proctored by our head coach and will follow that day’s specific program. This class is perfect for athletes with 6+ months’ experience.

Head Coach — Jesse Irizarry. He is a former D1 Strength and Conditioning Coach and was mentored by Bill Gillespie and Dave Williams, two of the few CSCCa master strength coaches. He has close to ten years experience coaching and has competed in both Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting.

Strength Groundwork — This course will teach proper execution of the squat, deadlift, and press (bench and overhead). Over the duration of the 8-week course we’ll push your capacity to lift more than ever before. Each class includes guided warm-up, the programmed workout, which will include substantial hands-on technique work along with accessory strength work. This class is ideal for those who are new to weight training.

Privat Programs:

  • Custom Programming provides a flexible option for athletes who are unable to fit our group classes into their schedule or prefer an approach tailored exclusively to them. Custom Programming is perfect for athletes with an inconsistent schedule, and/or anyone wishing to supplement strength training into their current regiment. As this program is specially designed to your needs, you decide on the number of training days per week, duration of sessions and your overall focus. In addition, each month you’ll meet with one of our coaches for a one-on-one session to go over your progress and technique;
  • A one-on-one session is the perfect setting to focus on your technique and weaknesses at the convenience of your schedule. Sessions are available with any of our coaches;
  • Remote Coaching — You can now join us remotely via the JDI Barbell Online Weightroom. As a remote JDI Barbell Athlete, you’ll have access to our latest training programs and our online remote-coaching forum where you can submit your training videos for review by our coaches and mix and mingle with other members of the team.

  • Laura Khoudari — She is a powerlifter, National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer specializing in trauma-informed training, and serves on the advisory board of the Women's Strength Coalition. She is the Assistant Coach for the Strength Groundwork program;
  • Nancy Brown — She is a powerlifter, former bikini competitor and a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Nancy runs the Silent Strength program at JDI.

All of our coaches on staff have collegiate level basketball experience. They all are also certified by Jr. NBA, AAU and USA Basketball. Our wealth of experience and our pledge to implement Jr. NBAUSA Youth Basketball Development offers  a unique and comprehensive perspective Basketball experience.

Skill Development (ages 5-17) — 15 players per class. Individualize training programs also available (no more than 4 players per class). 1-on-1, 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5.

AAU (ages 11-17) — Players have the opportunity to showcase their skills throughout the country under both  AAU (www.aausport.org) and USA (www.usab.com) Basketball coaches. Our players  work very hard. Our schedule includes tournaments in Washington D.C., Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Nevada and California.

Basketball at First Shot Basketball School - PS 139 First Shot Basketball School - PS 139 1 Photo

Each First Shot semester is 12 weeks beginning early October and February.

Classes are held Saturdays and Sundays. Also certain weeknights at 6:30 PM. We take only 20 students in most classes. 16 in Supertots and 14 in the Powerball Program. Each full class has 4-5 basketball coaches.

Programs:

  • Super Tots for ages 3-4. Integrating skills with fun games and activities developed to promote coordination, balance, and the social skills of working in a group. Limited enrollment for this very popular class;
  • Our Pee Wee Class for ages 5-6, teaches basic basketball skills tailored to this age group;
  • Basics/Beginner – for ages 7-10 teaches basketball fundamentals including shooting, passing, dribbling with a dose of good sportsmanship. We play full court games and our coaches play in the game so the children learn by watching the coach rather than another child in the class;
  • Olympix, for boys and girls, 9-12, is an innovative concept in youth basketball. The first half of the twelve week semester provides instruction, skills and technique along with full court games. The second half focuses on a series of basketball contests and games;
  • Advanced Olympix (ages 11-14);
  • Powerball Advanced Training (ages 12-15) — This is a unique program developed for players age 12-15, whose skill and expertise is beyond those in our regular Olympix, and who want to play on a team in the future. This class is for the serious player who wants to excel in the game;
