Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestres of Capoeira Luanda.

Instructors:

  • Professor Sabiá started his training under the supervision of Mestre Jelon Vieira with Grupo Capoeira Brasil in Salvador. Sabiá received his Professor rank in 2012. Currently Professor Sabiá teaches in New York City and the surrounding boroughs at the YMCA in Flushing, Queens and PMT Dance Studio in Manhattan;
  • Instrutora Trindade has been training with Capoeira Luanda first under Professor Tiba and then under Professor Sabiá since 2005. Under Professor Sabiá's guidance, she has reached the rank of graduada. She currently teaches children’s Capoeira classes in Queens and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also works for the Capoeira Center of New York, a nonprofit organization, where she promotes Capoeira through school presentations and programs. She is delighted to join the staff of PMT Dance Studio and teach Capoeira.

  • Treinel Michael ‘Puck’ Kranz — For 4 years, he studied in Oakland under CM Rogerio and Mestre Jurandir, as well as the other mestres of FICA, which transformed his life for the better. Upon moving back to his native New York in 2004, Puck sought to continue studying, playing and living Capoeira Angola, which eventually led to co-founding the group in New York. In both Oakland and New York, Puck has worked with various programs for children, youth and people struggling with addiction, realizing the power of Capoeira Angola to heal, empower and build community;
  • Njoli Brown — He began his study of Capoeira in Denmark (1997). After two years of intensive study with group Quilombo do Norte came the decision to study the Angola style of capoeira with a master (mestre) of the art form. In 1999 came a move to Seattle to train with Mestre Jurandir Nascimento who, at the time, had recently moved to the northwest from southern Brasil to start a chapter of the International Capoeira Angola Foundation.

Class is broken down in 3 aspects:

  • Kata is the practice of basics and forms;
  • Tameshigiri (or test cutting), in Toyama Ryu Batto Jutsu, is to test the cutting ability of the sword, gain experience in striking a solid object and improve timing, distance, angle and grip;
  • Gekken is free play or sparring. We use foam swords, but although they do use foam, they are not flexy or soft. They have a dense center and can do some damage and understand gekken is not for everyone.

  • Civilian Instructor Course (CIC) — This program offers the most advanced curriculum of up-to-date techniques and tested implementations. The course has 2 parts: The 1st part covers P1 through P3 material, which includes the history of Krav Maga and its evolution, fundamental instructional skills and lesson development. The 2nd part progresses to P4 and P5 of the curriculum. This includes lesson construction, safety protocols, vulnerable points of the body, extensive attack principals, and advanced defensive skills;

Taoist Martial Arts progress clearly and intelligently from beginning skills to advanced abilities. The School of Natural Chinese Martial Arts offers complete training in the chief systems of Traditional and Taoist Martial Arts. Learning the fundamentals one system usually takes 2 years. Once one system is finished the others are much easier to learn.

Instructor Classes are are all small and semi-private.

There are three levels of study:

  • Complete System: This level is for students who want to learn the complete system of Natural Chinese Martial Arts;
  • Single System: This is for students who wish to focus on one system. Each system contains Taoist Philosophy and Chin-Chiao Each system usually takes two years. After one system has been learned, the others are much easier to understand and usually take one year each to learn;
  • Tai-Chi & Taoist Longevity: This is for students who have little interest in martial arts but wants to benefit from Taoist theories of following nature and cultivating energy.

Each system consists of 6 sections. It takes an average of two years to learn the basics of each system and achieve a 1st degree Black Belt. During the course of regular, weekly study, all the skills are developed. However, each section can be studied via intense private or seminar study.
