Fencing at Fencers Club Fencers Club 1 Photo

All classes are taught by our Master Coaches who have earned Maestro degrees from internationally-acclaimed programs and who have extensive coaching experience with all levels of fencers, from beginners to Olympians.

Private lessons are approximately 20 minutes in length. Group classes are approximately 1.5 hours in length.

Coaches:

  • Alexey Cheremsky — He was born in Ukraine and received his degree from the Ukrainian State University of Physical Education and Sport. After coaching in Kiev, Alexey moved to Israel where he was the National Team coach from 2000-2005. Alexey moved to the United States in 2006 and was named the Cadet and Junior National Team Coach in 2011. Alexey’s students are high achieving and dedicated students, both on and off the fencing strip. Many of Alexey’s students are nationally and internationally competitive. Among them are top-3 Junior world fencers, 7 NCAA medalists, and numerous US Cadet and Junior Team members;
  • Kornel Udvarhelyi — Kornel graduated with high honors from the Masters program at the Hungarian Institute of Physical Education. As the Hungarian National Junior Epee Coach, his top student won the Cadet World Championship, Junior World Cup Championship, and a silver medal at the Junior World Championships. His American students have had similar success at the Cadet and Junior World Championships, as well as US National and NCAA Championships. He is a former US Women’s Epee National Team coach, and he coached one of his students, Kamara James, at the 2004 Olympic Games;

  • Boris Vaksman — He began his fencing career in Odessa, Ukraine at the age of 14. After only 3 years Boris was awarded the title “Master of Sport.” One year later, at the age of 18, Coach Vaksman became Ukrainian National Champion and Soviet Union Championship, both of which he went on to win 3 times by the age of 21. In total, Vaksman earned an impressive 56 medals in International and Soviet competitions between 1978 and 1983. After moving to the U.S. in 1989 he began his coaching career in New York;

  • Eduard Elterman — He was born in Minsk, Belarus, and fenced on both the Cadet and Junior National Teams. Elterman came to the United States in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 he was a foil coach at Blade Fencing Club in New York. The following year Elterman became the foil and epee coach for New York University, where he developed 12 NCAA All-Americans. Elterman joined the Fencers Club as a coach in 1991;

  • Simon Gershon — Gershon earned his Masters degree in fencing from the Kiev Institute of Physical Education. He was also a coach at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, and has served as the US National Men’s Foil Coach;

  • Irene Gershon — a former Regional and Collegiate Coach in Ukraine and assistant coach at St. John’s University, received her degree in fencing with high honors from the Kiev Institute of Physical Education. She supervises several youth developmental groups in addition to training many top men and women foilists at Fencers Club, including 2012 Olympians Miles Chamley-Watson and Nicole Ross;

  • Sean McClain & Alex Martin;

  • Mikhail Petin — Mikhail earned his Masters degree in both Physical Education and fencing at the Institute of Physical Education in Lvov, Ukraine. Since arriving in the United States, his top students have won a Silver Medal in Olympic Games (Beijing, 2008), 4 Gold and 4 Bronze Medals at the Junior and Cadet World Championships, as well as numerous international, national and NCAA Titles. Mikhail is a former U.S. National Women’s Foil Coach, and he was also awarded the 2003 Fencing Developmental Coach of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee;

  • Mihaly Csikany — Originally from Tapolca, Hungary, Coach Mihaly (pronounced “Me-hi”) Csikany was on the Hungarian Junior National Team and fenced competitively at the Cadet and Junior World Cup levels. Upon moving to the U.S., he began a successful sabre coaching career in California training students who have earned World Cup medals, NCAA Championships, and National titles;

  • Akhnaten Spencer-El — He is a 2009 graduate of Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary where he completed his Maestro’s degree. A native of Harlem, Spencer-El started fencing at the Peter Westbrook Foundation at the age of 13. He is a three-time U.S. Junior Sabre National Champion, a two-time Senior National Sabre Champion (1999, 2000), and in 1998 was ranked the No. 1 Junior Sabre fencer in the world. He was also a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team.

Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestres of Capoeira Luanda.

Instructors:

  • Professor Sabiá started his training under the supervision of Mestre Jelon Vieira with Grupo Capoeira Brasil in Salvador. Sabiá received his Professor rank in 2012. Currently Professor Sabiá teaches in New York City and the surrounding boroughs at the YMCA in Flushing, Queens and PMT Dance Studio in Manhattan;
  • Instrutora Trindade has been training with Capoeira Luanda first under Professor Tiba and then under Professor Sabiá since 2005. Under Professor Sabiá's guidance, she has reached the rank of graduada. She currently teaches children’s Capoeira classes in Queens and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also works for the Capoeira Center of New York, a nonprofit organization, where she promotes Capoeira through school presentations and programs. She is delighted to join the staff of PMT Dance Studio and teach Capoeira.

Taekwondo & MMA at International Martial Arts Center International Martial Arts Center

We teach Tae Kwon Do as the main art but incorporate techniques from other Asian arts to develop a complete martial art system.

Classes:

  • Kids Martial Arts  — We teach our classes by combining drills and games that our young students enjoy. Just a few of the Taekwondo skills kids grasp are how to accomplish effective kicks, sweeps, blocks, and strikes;
  • Adult Martial Arts — All experience levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to enroll.

Instructor — Andrew Hahn, 8th degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a 6th degree Black Belt in Hapkido. He possess more than thirty years of teaching experience.

Master Hahn won a silver medal at the 1975 National AAU Tae Kwon Do Karate Championship and was Champion of the 1976 All American Invitational Karate Championships. He has been featured in Black Belt Magazine numerous times.
