Class begins with approximately 45 minutes of general exercise aimed at developing the strength, endurance and other skills. While this usually takes the form of calisthenics, emphasis is also given to flexibility, balance, concentration, breathing and coordination. The remaining 1 hour and 15 minutes is spent learning new techniques or refining old ones. Forms, meditation, practical applications and fighting are also covered.

Each class may be divided beginner, intermediate and advanced groups. Each of these is lead by a qualified instructor and each class is supervised by a senior instructor or Master.

Within 2 to 3 years, a student may be eligible to take the test for her or his first degree. The test takes approximately 7-8 hours to complete and is given once a year in two parts: written and physical. Satisfactory completion of this test earns the student the title of Assistant Instructor. A student may be eligible to test for her or his second degree 3 to 5 years after being awarded the first degree rank.

Masters:

  • Master Robert Thomas has been a member of the Chinese Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Association since 1974. Born in Queens and growing up in the Bronx, he began his training as a high school student. His training garnered him the discipline to work his way through college, while continuing to attain his present position of Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Master Instructor and Co-Director;
  • Master Oswald Rivera has been a member of the Chinese Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Association since 1973. He has been instrumental in bringing attention to the Association through his editorial and advertising efforts; writing for various publications such as Black Belt Magazine and Inside Kung-Fu;
  • Master Paul Johnson eventually attended the Queens Academy of Aeronautics, obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Aircraft Technology as well as several specialized licences in 1976. Since 1983 he has worked as a Car Inspector for the MTA. Paul joined the Chinese Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Association in 1974, studying alongside Master Robert Thomas;
  • Master Jerome Cook has been a member of the Chinese Kung Fu, Wu Su Association since 1968. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, he began his training during elementary school, practiced intermittently during high school and college, and returned to the Association after his university studies;
  • Master Luc Dorsinville began to experiment with weight training and sports including an informal introduction to Karate and Judo. In the late 1960’s however martial arts were outlawed in Haiti prematurely ending this first exposure to fighting systems. In 1984 he joined the Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Association. In 2010 Luc was awarded his Master Instructor title;
  • Master Sidney Camille joined the Kung-Fu, Wu-Su Association in August 1988. Sidney’s first formal introduction in the martial arts was at Brooklyn Technical High School where he was a member of the school’s Tai Kwon Do club. Later, while studying at Polytechnic University he learned some elements of Judo.

Utilizing the Shaolin Kung Fu tradition, incorporated with Cha’an Buddhism, the Shaolin Kung Fu Training Center uses no ranking or belt systems. Master Hengxin teaches there is no end point to a student's training, rather the potential for improvement is limitless.

Incstructors:

  • Shifu Hengxin (Shifu is Mandarin for Master) was introduced to martial arts at an early age when his uncle first brought him to the Songshan Shaolin Monastery. After years of training in Shaolin Martial Arts and philosophy under Shi Yanling, Shi Yanbo, Shi Yanzi and Shi Yansi, Shifu Hengxin attained the highest levels of Shaolin expertise. During the early 1990's, Shifu Hengxin toured the world with other members of the Shaolin Monastery in the Monk's delegation tours. In 1996, Shifu Since relocating to New York, Shifu Hengxin has appeared on the Discovery Channel, in magazines, and has participated in numerous demonstrations and seminars throughout the United States;
  • Shimu Arlene Y. Fan was born and raised in Hong Kong, where her childhood was surrounded by the Martial Arts influence. In 1999, Shimu Arlene, as a dedicated practitioner of Shaolin Kung Fu, entered the teaching side of the Art. As Director of the Center, Shimu’s primary goal was towards the development of a Teen and Youth program, where she can cultivate the mind and body early on in childhood. Her participation in many community services, performances and numerous cultural outreach programs has prompted the Y.M.C.A. to ask her to develop and oversee a Shaolin Kung Fu program involving our younger generation.

Our Kung Fu program is based on a combination of one-on-one and group training with plenty of personal attention. We begin our curriculum by teaching martial arts basics and their self-defense applications.

Every Youth Class includes:

Sifu Lloyd D. Wright (4th Dan 5th Generation) — Yee’s Hung Ga Kung Fu International Board Member. He has been a practitioner of Hung Ga kung fu for nearly 20 years. Sifu Lloyd began his formal training in the late 90's under his Sifu, Sifu Joseph Demundo, 4th generation owner/chief instructor of the Yee's Hung Ga Chinatown branch. Sifu Lloyd is also fortunate to have been receiving training and knowledge for the past 18 years from his Sigun Grandmaster Frank Yee (Yee Chi Wei) through his yearly in depth seminars and workshops.

Kung Fu at Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu

Hung Kuen is a graceful and powerful style of Kung Fu based on five animals: Dragon, Tiger, Leopard, Crane, and Snake.

Classes are two hours long, and are designed to provide a comprehensive approach to all aspects of Hung Kuen.

An example of a standard class structure:

  1. Warm up;

  2. Traditional stances and hand/leg techniques;

  3. Shaolin forms;

  4. Partnered applications of hand/leg techniques;

  5. Padwork;

  6. Sparring;

  7. Self-defense.

For senior students, instruction in traditional Shaolin weapons (monkey staff, broadsword, halberd, spear, knives, etc.) becomes a key portion of the curriculum as well.

Master Karl Pettersen is an accredited Master of Hung Kuen Kung Fu, 6th Degree Black Belt, and the Head Black Belt Instructor for the club. Karl studied Hung Kuen under the auspices of Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu UK through Master Ang and his team of instructors, and over time became a qualified instructor.

All new students will be placed on a six-month probation period and must demonstrate their diligence during those first six months of training before offically being accepted. Proper attitude, diligent effort, and good attendance is a requirement in order to be accepted and remain a student.

The classes are conducted in both a formal and non-formal style, whereby the students are given directed instruction for large segments of each session, as well as time allowed for personal training at one's own pace. This can involve solo training, such as working on forms or individual skills and working with a partner on specific drills to enhance overall skills and attributes.

Instructors:

  • Sifu David A Ross — Director and founder NY San Da, Head Instructor. He began boxing at the age of 8 and then went on to study Korean Taekwondo and Hapkido. Under the late master Pong Ki-Kim he earned second degree Black Belts in both arts and was also the New York State AAU full contact Taekwondo champion for two years. David then studied Chinese martial arts (Lama Pai and Choy Lay Put) and San Da under the late master Chan Tai-San;
  • Frank Polanco — Black Belt and a certified san da kickboxing instructor. Frank is dedicated to the martial arts, also studying Judo. In both the “Kickboxing l0l” classes KJ and the San Da / Muay Thai classes he helps students correct their technique and achieve their best;
  • Rebecca Wind — Associate instructor. Rebecca began her kickboxing training in 1998 and is certified in general fitness by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and in Fitness Kickboxing by both AFAA and the National Association of Professional Martial Artists (NAPMA). She has been teaching since 2002.

Programs:

  • Beginners' TaiJi — This is a short form that can be completed in 5-10 minutes, good for relaxing and improving one's body and health. Each week, new movements are added to the form, each new movement brings new discoveries;
  • Open Push Hands — Push hands is the two-person TaiJi training. We focus on soft-style push hands as popularized by Prof. Cheng. Skills include rooting, listening, neutralizing, and returning power.

Instructor — Terry Collins. He was a favored student of Master Don Ahn, a master of esoteric Daoism. Terry has been studying the art of TaiJiQuan for over 15 years, and was certified as a teacher in 2005. He has learned Daoist Meditation, Rooting Power, TaiJiQuan, Push Hands, Da Lu, Sword Form, Knife, and Double Knife. Terry continues his studies of TaiJi in the Chen Style, with Master Ren Guang Yi (20th Generation Chen Style Master), and has received instruction from Master Chen, Xiao Wang (Chen family standard-bearer).

  • Mike Dewar (CSCS, USAW1, USAW2) — He holds a Masters and Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology, with additional experience working with athletic populations. Additionally, Mike is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Advanced Sports Performance Coach of USA Weightlifting, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at New York University. Mike is actively competing in USA Weightlifting meets as an 85 and 94kg weightlifter;
  • Nick De Freitas (BS, CSCS, USAW1) — He holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, with previous work experience under Cornell University, and Ithaca College. Nick is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Sports Performance Coach of USA Weightlifting, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at New York University. Nick currently competes as a 77kg weightlifter under the USA Weightlifting organization.

All of our training drills and tactics come directly from Arsenal FC. Training methods used by the 1st team at Colney and the youth Academy at Hale End are replicated through our customized coach's curriculum, and represent the latest findings in the technical, tactical and psychological aspects of the game and individual player development.

Academy players train a minimum of three times a week and play a maximum of two games incorporating both EDP league and tournament play. In addition, select teams travel to London each year to compete against local opposition, and for exclusive visits to Arsenal FC facilities.

Developmental Program

Participation in our programming follows the major player development pathways for all youth soccer players. We build for each player’s future by offering: academy travel teams, developmental programs, skills classes, clinics and camps:
