Tai Chi at Taiji Union Taiji Union

Programs:

  • Beginners' TaiJi — This is a short form that can be completed in 5-10 minutes, good for relaxing and improving one's body and health. Each week, new movements are added to the form, each new movement brings new discoveries;
  • Open Push Hands — Push hands is the two-person TaiJi training. We focus on soft-style push hands as popularized by Prof. Cheng. Skills include rooting, listening, neutralizing, and returning power.

Instructor — Terry Collins. He was a favored student of Master Don Ahn, a master of esoteric Daoism. Terry has been studying the art of TaiJiQuan for over 15 years, and was certified as a teacher in 2005. He has learned Daoist Meditation, Rooting Power, TaiJiQuan, Push Hands, Da Lu, Sword Form, Knife, and Double Knife. Terry continues his studies of TaiJi in the Chen Style, with Master Ren Guang Yi (20th Generation Chen Style Master), and has received instruction from Master Chen, Xiao Wang (Chen family standard-bearer).

  • Mike Dewar (CSCS, USAW1, USAW2) — He holds a Masters and Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology, with additional experience working with athletic populations. Additionally, Mike is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Advanced Sports Performance Coach of USA Weightlifting, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at New York University. Mike is actively competing in USA Weightlifting meets as an 85 and 94kg weightlifter;
  • Nick De Freitas (BS, CSCS, USAW1) — He holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, with previous work experience under Cornell University, and Ithaca College. Nick is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Sports Performance Coach of USA Weightlifting, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at New York University. Nick currently competes as a 77kg weightlifter under the USA Weightlifting organization.

All of our training drills and tactics come directly from Arsenal FC. Training methods used by the 1st team at Colney and the youth Academy at Hale End are replicated through our customized coach's curriculum, and represent the latest findings in the technical, tactical and psychological aspects of the game and individual player development.

Academy players train a minimum of three times a week and play a maximum of two games incorporating both EDP league and tournament play. In addition, select teams travel to London each year to compete against local opposition, and for exclusive visits to Arsenal FC facilities.

Developmental Program

Participation in our programming follows the major player development pathways for all youth soccer players. We build for each player’s future by offering: academy travel teams, developmental programs, skills classes, clinics and camps:

  • Residential Camp — Open to boys and girls ages 10-16, Arsenal Soccer Schools Elite Residential Camps offer young field players and keepers of all talent levels the opportunity to work with youth coaches from one of the elite English and European clubs;
  • Day Camps — Open to boys and girls ages 5-16, Arsenal Soccer Schools Day Camps offer young field players and keepers of all talents levels the opportunity to work with youth coaches from one of the elite English and European clubs;
  • Clinics — This program focuses on the introduction and ball mastery of skill in a fun learning environment. This is achieved through maximum ball contacts, expert coaching, skills challenges and homework assignments.

Programs:

  • PowerPlay — These weekly, coached, 3 hour sessions are run on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the Spring and Fall seasons. The fee is $240 per season. Each week, on Sunday afternoons at 1:45 PM, you’ll come to practice before playing your match or ref your match (which will start at 3 or 4 PM).  Here’s the exciting part — your practice will include help with volleyball fundamentals and be coached by our Power Training staff.  After practice, you and your team will play your match, and then go hang out afterward;
  • Open Plays — It offer a casual environment of friendly competition, with game scores but no standings. Our Open Plays have firm eligibility guidelines for each level to help ensure court safety and maintain the level of play. Teams are assigned randomly by the Gotham Leader running the event, with the aim of distributing skill sets as evenly as possible across all teams. Open Play is primarily designed for individual registration and participation. It is not a team-based program;
  • Pre-Tryout Open Plays — This is for players registered to try out for specific Gotham Divisions. These open plays provide opportunities for Captains-elect and aspiring players to meet and greet, to scout and be scouted. To promote and protect the special purpose behind this less-common Open Play format, the players who will be trying out for any of the upcoming season’s Divisions for which the Open Play is designed to be a showcase of skills, will receive priority in our registration process over the Captains themselves. Players are encouraged to wear their tryout numbers during the Open Play, and Captains are encouraged to come scout and take notes;
  • RED Open Plays — This is “around” the first Monday of each month during the Fall season at The O. Henry Learning Center. This Open Play is for players in Gotham Volleyball Divisions 1-3, Power A or B, NAGVA BB or A rated players, and other non-Gotham players who play at a advanced level;
  • ORANGE Open Plays — This is on most Monday evenings of the Fall season at the O. Henry Learning Center. Registration will open on this page each preceding Friday at 12:00 noon. This Open Play is for players in Gotham Volleyball Divisions 3-6, Power B or C, and other non-Gotham players who play at intermediate level;
  • GREEN Open Plays — This is on most Wednesday and Thursday evenings of the Fall season at The O. Henry Learning Center, alternating nights monthly. This Open Play is for players in Gotham Volleyball Divisions 7-8, or Power D, and other non-Gotham players who play at a beginner level;
  • VIOLET Open Plays — This is on most Wednesday and Thursday evenings of the Fall season at The O. Henry Learning Center, alternating nights monthly. This Open Play is for players in Gotham Volleyball Divisions 9-10, Power D, PowerPlay, and other non-Gotham players who play at a beginner level;
