American Jiu-Jitsu & Pekiti-Tirsia Kali at American Jiu Jitsu Center Of Manhattan American Jiu Jitsu Center Of Manhattan 1 Photo

American Jiu Jitsu (AJJ) is a scenario-based self-defense art that teaches students to respond to realistic situations with minimal effort using principles of physics, balance, and knowledge of human anatomy.

AJJ draws from traditional martial arts such as Aiki jiu jitsu, Daito-ryu, Aikido, Kali, Judo and Muay Thai to teach students effective timing, and use of footwork and body positioning for prompt neutralization of an attack while avoiding use of strength against strength.

Our classes are all levels. Our higher level students pride themselves on the support and guidance they give our new and less advanced students. We encourage students who have not had any maritial arts training to join our dojo.

PTK-SMF™ is The Authentic Pekiti-Tirsia Kali system of Close-Quarters Combat Blade Fighting.

Pekiti-Tirsia is a proven system of Combat Strategy and Tactics that provides Protection from Strikes and Attacks, Destruction of Opponents Weapons, and Domination of any Combat or Self-Defense situation, executed with techniques that Attack, Quarter, and Neutralize Single or Multiple Opponents.

Class is broken down in 3 aspects:

  • Kata is the practice of basics and forms;
  • Tameshigiri (or test cutting), in Toyama Ryu Batto Jutsu, is to test the cutting ability of the sword, gain experience in striking a solid object and improve timing, distance, angle and grip;
  • Gekken is free play or sparring. We use foam swords, but although they do use foam, they are not flexy or soft. They have a dense center and can do some damage and understand gekken is not for everyone.

Fencing at New Amsterdam Fencing Academy - Lower East Side New Amsterdam Fencing Academy - Lower East Side

At New Amsterdam Fencing Academy (NAFA), we stress the four complimentary elements in training a fencer: Group work (footwork and conditioning), individual lessons, practice bouting, and competitions.

NAFA offers classes for children of all ages. We also organize fencing birthday parties, school programs, and camps.

Weekly group fencing classes are the core of our program.  The group format fosters cohesion among club members, teaches good sportsmanship, and helps develop key social skills.

Programs:

  • Junior — program for students ages 13 to 18 up offers a two-hour class integrating intricate footwork, advanced weapon control, strategy and tactics, as well as the long-term self-discipline key to navigating a successful adolescence;
  • Youth — fencers aged 9 to 12 are ready to commit to an hour (Beginner) or two-hour long (Advanced) group class emphasizing the technical and the tactical aspects of the sport;
  • FIT Kids (Fencers In Training) — 6 to 8 year old beginning swordsmen engage in an hour-long class that uses the building blocks of competitive fencing to emphasize the importance of working together. First through third graders engage in games and exercises that focus on the development of hand-eye coordination, general fitness, and body movement. While playing with swords.

Wing Chun Kung Fu at Michael Militano Wing Chun Kung Fu Michael Militano Wing Chun Kung Fu 1 Photo

Master Instructor — Michael Militano. From an early age, he demonstrated natural talent as an athlete and fighter, but after years of studying boxing, wrestling, some Karate. Jiu Jitsu, gymnastics, and various weaponry, he found his niche in Wing Chun (under the sole instruction of Grandmaster Jason Lau). After only three years of study, Grandmaster Jason Lau appointed Michael Militano to teach, and soon thereafter, to take over the school when Grandmaster Lau left New York.

Instructors as well as many students from other martial arts schools have turned to Sifu Militano's expertise to enhance their knowledge of fighting - and for good reason. His competitive students (of all levels) have won numerous tournaments when competing against advanced level martial artists. Sifu Militano has taught Wing Chun to law enforcement instructors, military personnel, children, the blind and visually impaired, and he was invited to train the U.S. National Guard.
