  • Alexius “Stealth” Phoenix — Sambo/Judo Coach. Alexius has been training at NY Combat Sambo since 2007. He holds a Shodan in Judo and Japanese JuJitsu. Alexius’ competitive record is a long and accomplished one including a Bronze Medal (Judo) at the 2011 World Police & Fireman’s Games. He has placed in numerous other events including the Good Fight, World MMA Expo Takedown Tournament, Ultimate Sambo Submission Showdown, North American Freestyle Sambo Championships, and Canadian Freestyle Sambo Open;
  • Paul Varacchi — Combat Sambo/Krav Maga Coach. Paul is a SAG-AFTRA Stunt Performer and certified Krav Maga Instructor; the only American certified by Professor Itay Gil of Protect Israeli Security Systems and the Director-in-Charge of Intelligence, Counter-Terrorism and Homeland Security Studies at Hebrew University. Paul is the owner and head instructor of Flow Krav Maga, Assistant Combat Sambo Instructor at NY Combat Sambo and a Certified Freestyle Sambo Official. Paul is also a graduate of Douglas Crosby’s Fighting for Film workshop and has a life-long love of movies and stunts;
  • Victor Severin — Apprentice Sambo Coach. Victor began training at New York Combat Sambo in 2012. He has achieved many accolades including Gold Medal - Arnold Classic Sambo Championship (2017), Gold Medal - Good Fight Winter Open Submission Only (2015), Silver Medal - North American Freestyle Sambo Championships (2015), Silver Medal - Virginia Freestyle Sambo Open (2015), Silver Medal - Arnold Classic Sambo Championship (2015), and a Silver Medal - Shuai Jiao US Open (2014). In 2017, Victor joined the staff at NYCS as an apprentice Sambo coach.

Instructors:

  • Tyga Maclin — Wrestling/Grappling Coach. Tyga started wrestling in 10th grade at Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon, NY in 1993. His first year wrestling he finished with a 14-10 record. His second year he quickly turned that around with a 29-3 record, 3 consecutive tournament championships, became divisional champion and became co-captain of the team. He accredits this to the training he received at NY Athletic Club under coach Sonny Greenhalgh (World Freestyle Champion from Iran), Hamid Kermanshah, Florian Ghinea (2x Romanian National Freestyle champion and 2x Division 3 national champion at Montclair State). In his senior year, he posted a 33-2 record, became divisional champion again and finished 2nd in the Section 1 championships;
  • Thomas “Sambo Ronin” Doyle — Grappling Coach. Tommy has been training with NY Combat Sambo since 2012. Tommy holds a Brown Belt in BJJ (Oct, 2016) and is a Level 1 coach under the International Submission Wrestling Alliance. Tommy has proven himself as an avid competitor racking up Gold Medals at the 2013 Good Fight Winter Open (No-Gi Adv) and the 2014 ADCC New York (Blue Belt Division/Gi), Big Apple BJJ Open (Blue Belt Division), Good Fight NJ Submission Only (No-gi purple - fastest submission award) and Good Fight NY Submission Only (no-gi Blue & Absolute). On November 21st Tommy made his MMA debut on the Victory VII card at Madison Square Garden. He defeated Mike Kelly via 1st round.

Programs:

  • Kids BJJ — Aimed at kids ages 6-15 yrs old, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kids Program integrates physical education and self-defense technique with conditioning and skill-building games aimed at improving coordination, motor skills, agility and flexibility;
  • Fundamentals Program (Blue Belt) — This program is the first level for adults (over the age of 16) beginning their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. Class structure is formed around a warm-up, a lesson in technique and partner training to practice the technique from the lesson;
  • Advanced Program (Purple Belt) — The Advanced Curriculum is primarily focused on sports BJJ with the Gi and No-Gi Classes. If the student would like to train self-defense they may come to the fundamentals classes as well until the level of Blue belt is attained;

Our Kung Fu program is based on a combination of one-on-one and group training with plenty of personal attention. We begin our curriculum by teaching martial arts basics and their self-defense applications.

Every Youth Class includes:

Sifu Henry Moy Yee (“Sifu”) began learning Ving Tsun from Grandmaster Moy Yat as a teenager in Hong Kong and continued to study under him until his death in 2001. Today Sifu teaches his students and disciples the Ving Tsun passed down to him by Moy Yat in the traditional Chinese style.

Classes:

  • Ving Tsun — The curriculum is comprised of three “empty hand” forms: Siu Nim Tau (“Little Idea”), Chum Kiu (“Searching Bridge”), and Biu Ji (“Shooting Fingers”). Advanced students learn Muk Yan Jong (“Wooden Dummy”), Luk Dim Bun Gwun (“Six and a Half Point Pole”) and Bat Jaam Dou (“Eight Cut Knives”). Students also participate in partner drills designed to help them master important techniques for self-defense. San Sau drills, or “Sticky Hands,” teach the practical applications of Ving Tsun by breaking down individual fighting techniques and drilling them with a partner;
  • The Kung Fu Kids Class introduces students (must be ages 8 and up) to the Shaolin Fist and Ving Tsun styles of Chinese Kung Fu;
  • Disciple Class — It was created for serious students who have made a commitment to Sifu and have been accepted as his disciples. It provides an opportunity for these students to deepen their knowledge of Kung Fu by learning many different styles and forms of martial arts, including weapons training.

Kung-Fu classes are taught focusing on the over all development of the student. At the basic level great focus is put upon the fundamentals. In this class students will develop stances, punches, and kicks, breath control, and basic self defense techniques they can readily use in a short period of time. Students later learn to combine more advanced techniques together at will for fighting as well as various fighting styles.

Private and semi-private classes are offered, Thursday and Saturday (2 hr and 1 hr classes offered).

Kung Fu at Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu

Hung Kuen is a graceful and powerful style of Kung Fu based on five animals: Dragon, Tiger, Leopard, Crane, and Snake.

Classes are two hours long, and are designed to provide a comprehensive approach to all aspects of Hung Kuen.

An example of a standard class structure:

  1. Warm up;

  2. Traditional stances and hand/leg techniques;

  3. Shaolin forms;

  4. Partnered applications of hand/leg techniques;

  5. Padwork;

  6. Sparring;

  7. Self-defense.

For senior students, instruction in traditional Shaolin weapons (monkey staff, broadsword, halberd, spear, knives, etc.) becomes a key portion of the curriculum as well.

Master Karl Pettersen is an accredited Master of Hung Kuen Kung Fu, 6th Degree Black Belt, and the Head Black Belt Instructor for the club. Karl studied Hung Kuen under the auspices of Hung Kuen Shaolin Kung Fu UK through Master Ang and his team of instructors, and over time became a qualified instructor.

All new students will be placed on a six-month probation period and must demonstrate their diligence during those first six months of training before offically being accepted. Proper attitude, diligent effort, and good attendance is a requirement in order to be accepted and remain a student.

The classes are conducted in both a formal and non-formal style, whereby the students are given directed instruction for large segments of each session, as well as time allowed for personal training at one's own pace. This can involve solo training, such as working on forms or individual skills and working with a partner on specific drills to enhance overall skills and attributes.

Instructors:

  • Sifu David A Ross — Director and founder NY San Da, Head Instructor. He began boxing at the age of 8 and then went on to study Korean Taekwondo and Hapkido. Under the late master Pong Ki-Kim he earned second degree Black Belts in both arts and was also the New York State AAU full contact Taekwondo champion for two years. David then studied Chinese martial arts (Lama Pai and Choy Lay Put) and San Da under the late master Chan Tai-San;
  • Frank Polanco — Black Belt and a certified san da kickboxing instructor. Frank is dedicated to the martial arts, also studying Judo. In both the “Kickboxing l0l” classes KJ and the San Da / Muay Thai classes he helps students correct their technique and achieve their best;
  • Rebecca Wind — Associate instructor. Rebecca began her kickboxing training in 1998 and is certified in general fitness by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and in Fitness Kickboxing by both AFAA and the National Association of Professional Martial Artists (NAPMA). She has been teaching since 2002.
