Classes are 90 minutes long, and consist of warmup exercises, uchikomi (standing throwing drills), newaza uchikomi (groundfighting drills), timed newaza randori (groundfighting sparring with different partners), and timed tachiwaza randori (standing sparring with different partners).

Depending on your experience, you will be paired up with a senior-ranking member who will introduce you to the various components of the class and basic techniques. You will have personal attention for the first several months and you will set your own pace of learning with thoughtful and safe guidance to help you.

In Buddha Body Yoga, we take standard yoga poses and adjust, modify, and adapt them so that larger, overweight or injured people are able to successfully practice. By using supportive yoga gear (bolsters, pillows, blocks, belts, yoga ropes, and physioballs) we allow people to gradually improve their alignment, tone, balance, and flexibility.

Instructors:

  • Michael Hayes — has more than 20 years experience teaching and has studied extensively in the following traditions: Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Thai Yoga, Om Vinyasa Yoga and Yoga Anatomy. In addition, Michael has traveled regularly to Thailand to study with master teachers. His class will benefit anyone regardless of their individual anatomy, flexibility, age, or yoga background. Michael has also practiced massage for more than 20 years as a licensed massage therapist;
  • Anita Haravon — PhD, completed yoga teacher training at YogaWorks. Her teaching style is focused, supportive & fun! She has studied with yoga teachers at various studios in New York City, including Buddha Body Yoga, The Breathing Project and Ishta Yoga. Anita has traveled to Northern India, and studied yoga, meditation and breathing practices at Anand Prakash Ashram. Anita is a certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and volunteers with Central Park Medical Unit and the American Red Cross;
  • Sharyanne McSwain — She is a graduate of the inaugural class of Buddha Body Yoga’s teacher training program.

American Jiu Jitsu (AJJ) is a scenario-based self-defense art that teaches students to respond to realistic situations with minimal effort using principles of physics, balance, and knowledge of human anatomy.

AJJ draws from traditional martial arts such as Aiki jiu jitsu, Daito-ryu, Aikido, Kali, Judo and Muay Thai to teach students effective timing, and use of footwork and body positioning for prompt neutralization of an attack while avoiding use of strength against strength.

Our classes are all levels. Our higher level students pride themselves on the support and guidance they give our new and less advanced students. We encourage students who have not had any maritial arts training to join our dojo.

Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestres of Capoeira Luanda.

Instructors:

  • Professor Sabiá started his training under the supervision of Mestre Jelon Vieira with Grupo Capoeira Brasil in Salvador. Sabiá received his Professor rank in 2012. Currently Professor Sabiá teaches in New York City and the surrounding boroughs at the YMCA in Flushing, Queens and PMT Dance Studio in Manhattan;
  • Instrutora Trindade has been training with Capoeira Luanda first under Professor Tiba and then under Professor Sabiá since 2005. Under Professor Sabiá's guidance, she has reached the rank of graduada. She currently teaches children’s Capoeira classes in Queens and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also works for the Capoeira Center of New York, a nonprofit organization, where she promotes Capoeira through school presentations and programs. She is delighted to join the staff of PMT Dance Studio and teach Capoeira.
