Tai Chi at Taiji Union Taiji Union

Programs:

  • Beginners' TaiJi — This is a short form that can be completed in 5-10 minutes, good for relaxing and improving one's body and health. Each week, new movements are added to the form, each new movement brings new discoveries;
  • Open Push Hands — Push hands is the two-person TaiJi training. We focus on soft-style push hands as popularized by Prof. Cheng. Skills include rooting, listening, neutralizing, and returning power.

Instructor — Terry Collins. He was a favored student of Master Don Ahn, a master of esoteric Daoism. Terry has been studying the art of TaiJiQuan for over 15 years, and was certified as a teacher in 2005. He has learned Daoist Meditation, Rooting Power, TaiJiQuan, Push Hands, Da Lu, Sword Form, Knife, and Double Knife. Terry continues his studies of TaiJi in the Chen Style, with Master Ren Guang Yi (20th Generation Chen Style Master), and has received instruction from Master Chen, Xiao Wang (Chen family standard-bearer).

  • Pasquale Antonio (Assistant Instructor) is certified as a Systema Instructor by Vladimir Vasiliev. He has over 12 years experience training in various martial arts and began his studies in Systema with Edgars Cakuls in 2010. Pasquale founded Systema Jersey City in 2014 and teaches Martial Arts and Movement Fitness to both kids and adults in New York City and New Jersey.   A dedicated explorer of human movement, Pasquale also collaborates and trains with artists in dance, yoga and gymnastics;
  • Kenny Shor (Assistant instructor) is certified as an Systema Instructor by Vladimir Vasiliev. He​ began his Systema training with Edgars Cakuls in 2006. In his effort to constantly improve and build a deeper understanding of Systema he takes frequent trips around the US and Canada to train with direct Systema sources such as Vladimir Vasiliev, Mikhail Ryabko, and Martin Wheeler. He started his first Systema school in Oakland California in 2013 and now teaches in his home city New York;
  • Greg Drozdek  Ed.D. (Assistant Instructor) has been a student of Edgars Cakuls and a classroom teacher for the past twenty two years. Greg has thirty years of martial arts experience. He currently teaches children Martial Arts-Fitness at PS 20 on The Lower East Side. A dedicated teacher and administrator, Greg founded The Stanton Street Settlement in 1998, a free after-school program for immigrant children on The Lower East Side. He now runs New York Cares' Martial Arts Fitness Program at PS 20 and PS 2 in Chinatown.

  • Chungsanim Master Dominick Brioche — She is a three time Black Belt Hall of Fame inductee. She holds a 6th degree Black Belt in Jujitsu, a 4th degree in HapKiDo, and a 4th degree in TaeKwonDo;
  • Chungsanim Master Betty — SHe is currently holds the rank of 4th Dan in HapKiDo. She has also trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Shaolin Kung Fu, Judo, and Jujitsu. Betty holds the rank of 3rd Dan under Soke John Davis in Kumite Ryu Jujitsu;
  • Chungsanim Master Brad — He practiced several styles, attaining ranks in Tae Kwon Do, Shaolin Kempo, and in Kuk Sool Won before committing to HapKiDo at the WMAC. He currently holds the ranks of 4th Dan in HapKiDo and 2nd Dan in Kumite Ryu Jujitsu;
  • Chungsanim Master Jill Zoll-Burdick — She has trained with Master Herbert since 1998 and has a 4th degree black belt in HapKiDo;
  • Chungsanim Master Jonathan Waks — He received his 1st Dan Black Belt in HapKiDo in 2001, a 2nd Dan in 2004, 3rd Dan in 2010 and 4th in 2015. In addition, he also holds a First Dan - 2008 in VSK Jujitsu - Soke John Davis;
  • Eva Vaccaro — Kyosanim Advanced Instructor. She holds a 3rd Dan in Hapkido, and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Kumite Ryu Jujitsu under Soke Lil’ John Davis. Eva has been a Certified Pilates Machine and Mat Instructor, a Certified Fitness Trainer, and is currently certified with AAAI/ISMA;
  • Holly Kozak — Kyosanim Advanced Instructor. She has trained with Master Herbert for over 17 years and is a 3rd degree black belt in HapKiDo.

  • Nei Kung — is an internal system of Chi Kung, employing slow, deep breathing and requiring a relaxed physical stance and mental attitude;
  • Meditation;
  • Eternal Spring Chi Kung™ (Eternal Spring) — It is a healing exercise program and health maintenance system created by Grandmaster C. K. Chu. It includes aspects of Tai Chi, Nei Kung, and meditation.

Instructors:

  • Benjamin Ho — He began his education and practice of Chu Tai Chi in July of 2001. Tai Chi Chuan is the only martial arts Benjamin has ever studied. His favorite memory at the school was when he was asked by the late Grandmaster C.K. Chu to begin Apprenticeship Teaching in March of 2004;
  • Alex Kamlet — He had the privilege of learning Tai Chi and Nei Kung with Master C.K Chu since July, 1988. From 1996 to 1998 he was an assistant teacher. In 1998 Alex Kamlet started teaching classes independently. In April 2004 Alex received a Letter of Certification signed by the Master C.K Chu, to teach the disciplines of Tai Chi Chuan, Nei Kung, and Eternal Spring Chi Kung;
  • Grace Kim — She has been a student at CK Chu Tai Chi since 2005. Over the last 9 years, she has cultivated her internal martial arts training with a foundation built on tai chi, nei kung, and meditation. She is an occupational therapist at Weill Cornell Medical Center in the stroke rehabilitation research program and is currently a PhD candidate in the Occupational Therapy department at New York University;
  • Valerie LoGuidice — Started as a student in 2008. Was introduced to the school through the wonderful free classes offered at Bryant Park. After assisting at the park and the morning classes at the studio, she received certification as an Eternal Spring Instructor in 2013. She also received certification as a Medical Qigong Practitioner in 2013;
  • Steve Miller — He has been studying Tai Chi since 1987, and began assisting Master Chu in 1994. In 2011, He retired from a 30+ year career in Telecommunications, and currently spend a majority of my time teaching and practicing Tai Chi.

Our training team comes from a varied background of elite athletic competition, training and coaching.

Instructors:

  • Ryan Hopkins — Ryan currently competes in Olympic weightlifting and is a member of USA Weightlifting, both as a competitor and as a certified Advanced Sports Performance Coach. Ryan recently returned from Russia where he studied at the Olympic Training Center in Chekhov under Olympic Gold Medalist Dmitry Berestov and World Champion Dmitry Klokov;
  • Albert Matheny — Albert holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Exercise Physiology and Food Science/Human Nutrition, a Master of Science degree in Human Performance and is licensed as a Registered Dietitian. Currently, Albert serves as the consulting dietitian for DB Track Club, a professional track and field training group lead by Rana Reider (USA Track and Field National Coach of the Year in 2011);
  • Ross Twanmoh — Ross graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he studied Sports Medicine. His experiences includes working with athletes in a rehabilitative setting, one-on-one training, teaching group fitness and crossfit classes, online consulting, and assisting at Strongfirst Girya certifications. Ross has his CSCS, SFG II, FRCms, USAW, CF L1, and Kinstretch Instructor license;
  • Stephen Affaticato — Certifications: NASM- CPT, Focus Personal training (Master Course graduate);
  • Beth Lewis — She competed as a swimmer, gymnast and martial artist. She graduated with a BFA in Dance Performance from The University of Georgia. In 2009, Beth was hired by the Pilobolus Dance Theater and toured the globe until 2012. Beth is a NASM-CPT and a 200 hour yoga teacher certified through YogaWorks. She has been to EXOS Phase 1 and 2 and is currently working on her CSCS;
  • Chelsey Wilkens — She began gymnastics at a young age and continued on to compete at an elite level around the world. After retiring, she joined the circus as an acrobat and began coaching gymnastics with a focus on special needs athletes and worked with the Special Olympics. Chelsey became a personal trainer in 2009 with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She became a certified yoga teacher in 2011. Chelsey has since studied under some of the top coaches and educators in the world, including Stoyan Deltchev, Charles Poliquin, James LaValle and Ido Portal;
  • Sarah Revening — She was awarded the Most Improved Female Weightlifter by the Metropolitan Weightlifting Committee in 2015, and she has been featured in AM New York, speaking to her experience in the sport and as a trainer. She specializes in Olympic Weightlifting, and holds certifications through the National Council of Strength and Fitness as well as USA Weightlifting;
  • Scott Mitsiell — B.S. Exercise Physiology, ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C), NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Functional Movement Systems lvl 2 Certified (FMS), Strongfirst Russian Kettlebell Certified (SFG), Triggerpoint Certified, Pre/Post Natal Certified, ViPR, Bulgarian Bags, Athletic Republic Certified;
  • Jason Li — He is a NSCA certified personal trainer, a USAW Advanced Sports Performance Coach, a Catalyst Athletics Weightlifting Coach, and a FRC mobility specialist;
  • Dariusz Stankiewich — He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Strong First and Functional Movement Screen instructor, and USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach.
  • Gary Kuang — He has a coaching certification from USA Weightlifting (USAW) and has experience working with a wide range of athletes;
  • Jungin Jung — He is a Certified Athletic Trainer (NATA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (NSCA), Corrective Exercise Specialist (NASM), Sports performance coach level I (USAW), USA Track and field Coach Level I (USTF) and Functional Movement Screen Level I (FMS);

  • Bodyweight Bootcamp;
  • Kettlebells 101 — Classes cover all the basic kettlebell movements with emphasis placed on form, core strength and mobility and is a great precursor to our more advanced kettlebell and other conditioning classes;
  • Hell’s Bells — Class combines high intensity kettlebell training with mobility-based calisthenics and bodyweight movements;
  • MetCon:Mobility — We start with some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to help build strength and boost your metabolism then finish with some yoga for a dynamic cool down;
  • Momentum MetCon — It is good old fashioned hard work using a variety of different tools such as Kettlebells, ViPRs, Sandbags, Battleropes and TRX and Bodyweight Training;
  • Sandbags & Kettlebells — This high-intensity conditioning workout using a combination of Sandbags, Kettlebells, and your own bodyweight, all set to a Tabata timer. The high paced 45 minute workout;
  • Tacfit NYC — It is a high-intensity 40 minute workout focused on mobility and endurance that combines functional strength training with natural body “flows”;
  • Shred — (HIIT) workout with minimal rest periods;

  • Weightlifting Club — Our lifters train during the week according to their schedules, BUT we encourage our athletes to train as a team Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. We also provide for our club members coaching at local and national meets;
  • Weightlifting Level 1 — Take our six week weightlifting cycle. Each six week cycle features 12 intensive classes to not only learn how to properly execute the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk, but also how to increase your speed, power, and agility in the sport you compete in. Classes are one hour in length;
  • Private training.

The FITx training series utilizes a combination of only the best, most innovative training tools and methods: Training Ropes, Boxing, Kettlebells, Bosu Balls, Plyometrics, Speed, Agility, Balance Tools, Bodyweight, Traditional Barbells & Dumbbells, TRX Suspension Training.

Each exercise is performed in intervals for a period of time normally between 15 to 30 seconds. As you complete each exercise to the best of your ability, your results increase as your ability to complete each exercise increases.
